This summer with the support of ITI and MACA, Community Government of Gameti constructed the largest community garden in NWT with total area of 21,600 square feet, which provides good opportunity to learn about the benefits of growing local crops in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way. It reflects the initiative and strength of the community. It sends positive ripples throughout the community: sense of community belonging, increased self-confidence, connecting with nature, a chance to protect the environment, improved gardening skills, growing organic produce and food preservation techniques. It created the opportunity for the people to work together to improve the quality of the community in many ways (team building, leadership qualities, innovative). People from Gameti, Chief and Council members, staff and students from Jean Wetrade school devoted their time to sow various plants in the community garden, where they have been growing medicinal plants, berries and various vegetables. On Aboriginal Day, June 21st, 2014 community youths also dedicate their time to community garden by sowing the plants.
