Social Studies

At the time of this handbook's printing, K-3 Social Studies is planned to implement a territorial-wide pilot. Curriculum documents will be released as a pilot in the 2008-09 shcool year. (Look for insert).

A Subject Advisory Committee for SS K-3 was formed in 2007 to create an NWT SS curriculum based on the Manitoba Social Studies Foundation for Implementation document. A small-scale pilot of the curriculum was held in 2007-08.

What is provided below is information regarding the previous SS curriculum. If the new 2007 SS curriculum is not in place for the 2007-2008 school year, teachers are asked to default to the 1993 NWT curriculum (below).

Note:
Resources have been purchased to match the Social Studies Western and Northern Protocol framework. However, the NWT government mandates the continued use of the 1993 NWT Social Studies curriculum until a new curriculum is written to reflect the learning outcomes of the WNCP.
