Homework may be provided for Primary students. Teacher may choose to use a management plan, as illustrated on the following sample homework sheets. Clear, reusable homework bags are good for transporting work to and from home. Tips for Successful Homework Programs:
- Teachers should use homework as a confidence booster.
- Students should only have homework they can complete themselves.
- Use homework as a reinforcement of concepts already taught in class (or as a continuation of work done in class)
- Make homework fun! Students should enjoy the feeling they receive from completing their homework.
- Establish a routine for distributing and collecting homework. (A homework page and checklist for the morning works well).
- Incorporating incentive programs can help. (Suggestions include stickers, after-school movie club, treat of the week, etc.) These incentive programs should be not be used a bribery.
- Always use positve feedback when homework is completed.
- Start small - then increase as year progresses.
- Giving parents strategies will encourage them to get involved in their child's homework program.
- If possible start homework club in evening.
- Providing students with a separate homework book or folder will reduce compounding problems if homework is lost and/or forgotten.
Discuss with parents the idea of having a homework area set up in the child's room. Consider proper lighting, supplies, table and distraction-free zone.
