In this section you will find bags/purses made out of Caribou and/or Moose hide a unique material that cannot be reproduced by industrial tanning techniques. Tanning hides is still a traditional way of life in the north, and is a time consuming technique. Hides have rich smoky smell due the softening process of the hide.

Details: In Tłı̨chǫ it is called “ECHI-wo”. Used to carry “ETCHI”, pounded drymeat or pounded dryfish (pemican) or sometimes ek’a (fat) or even bannoc. The main bag is unsmoked hide which contains fat without letting it soak through. It preserves without drying out the food. The drawstring top of the bag and the decorative fringes are made of softened hide.
