2012 Heritage Week - Yellowknife

The City of Yellowknife is sponsoring an Art Show during the annual Heritage Week celebrations from February 20 – 26, 2012. Artists are invited to make submissions of original art work relating to the heritage and history of Yellowknife. Artwork must be framed and ready for hanging or display, and will be on public display for approximately one month.

Art will be accepted at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre no later than 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2012. Please review the attached Art Submission Form for all requirements.

All Artists must complete and sign an Art Submission Form (attached).
Theme: Communication
At its rawest, communication involves a sender and a receiver, a message, and a medium to flow through. Throughout history, mediums have been invented– language, ink and paper, dance, telephones, music, computers, etc., finding new ways to record and share information across vast distances in time and space. How have these changes in communication affected Yellowknife’s people, places and values, both past and present?
Art Drop Off:
Please provide a completed form to the City along with a photograph of the Art and any other accompanying documentation. All Art must be delivered to the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre attn. Mark Heyck. A copy of the submission form must accompany the art.
Art Pick-Up:
The Art, submitted for the Heritage Week, will be displayed at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. When the Heritage Art Show Display closes, the City will contact the artist with a request that the artist pick-up their art by a specific date. If the art is not picked up by this date, the art will become the property of the Yellowknife Heritage Committee.
Selection:
Artwork for display will be chosen by the Heritage Committee and may also be selected for purchase for the City collection. Artists must indicate their willingness to sell by signing the attached Form, as well as indicate a preferred purchase price on the attached Art Submission Form.

Eligibility
Applicants must currently be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution and returning to full time studies in the fall.

Hiring priority will be given to qualified applicants who are beneficiaries of BHP Billiton's Impact Benefit Agreement (IBA) Groups: North Slave Métis Alliance, Hamlet of Kugluktuk/Kitikmeot Inuit Association, Tlicho Treaty 11, and the Akaitcho Treaty 8 First Nations. Members must clearly identify their IBA status on the online job application and resume receiving priority consideration.

Your resume and/or cover letter should identify the following:
1) The Department you would like to be considered for.
2) Your field and level of study (i.e. Engineering, Degree) and the number of years you have completed in your program.

The rotation schedule for these positions may vary. Standard shift rotations for summer students are:

5x2 for Yellowknife based employees (5 days on followed by 2 days off, generally Monday to Friday)

2x2 for Ekati based employees (14 days on followed by 14 days off)

Candidates will be hired based on their northern residency. If residency is outside the communities of our regular fly points, candidates will be required to live in Yellowknife during the term of employment and be eligible for a housing supplement. BHP Billiton offers excellent salary packages and relevant training opportunities.

The Tłįchǫ Assembly is the law making authority for the Tłįchǫ Government. It is made up of the Tłįchǫ Grand Chief and a Chief, and two members from each of the four Tłįchǫ
communities.

NorthWords Prize - Application Deadline

If you published a book set in the NWT in 2011, please consider submitting your book for the 2012 NorthWords Prize. Guidelines are as follows:

1.The prize will be awarded for a book (not magazine articles or any other kinds of published materials).

2. Books of any genre are eligible: novels, children’s books, collections of short stories, poetry or essays, creative non-fiction, memoir.

3. The book must be published in 2011.

4. The book must be set in the NWT. In the case of a collection, at least 50 per cent of the stories, essays or poems should deal with NWT themes or settings.

5. The author(s) is not required to live in the NWT, but must have lived in the NWT at some time for five consecutive years.

6. The winning book will be presented with a plaque and $1000 at the NorthWords Writers Festival in June, 2012.

7. Books that have multgiple authors are eligible but the prize will be $1000, regardless of the number of authors.

8. Books written by NorthWords Board members, contractors or their immediate family members are not eligible.

9. To submit, please send two copies of your book to the following address before February 28, 2012:
