Summary: Literacy skills are crucial to daily living, employment, citizenship, personal advancement and enjoyment. In order to bring recognition to literacy achievements, the premiers of Canada created the Council of the Federation Literacy Award. The 2010 Northwest Territories Council of the Federation Literacy Award will honour the achievements of a learner, who has overcome obstacles and demonstrated outstanding progress in the pursuit of literacy skills in any of the NWT official languages.

Who is eligible? NWT learners of all ages, who have excelled in literacy achievement, improved personal literacy levels and helped others to improve their literacy levels. The learner must have been enrolled in classes within the past 18 months.

How many winners will there be?  One learner.

What does the Council of the Federation Literacy Award winner receive? The award winner will receive a Council of the Federation medallion and a certificate from the Premier of the Northwest Territories

What is the nomination format?  Fill out the nomination form. At least two letters of support are required. Additional supporting material, such as photographs, audio-visuals and samples of the nominee’s work, will be accepted.

Summary:Taiga Adventure Camp is a summertime leadership and outdoor adventure experience for girls, ages 11‐17, from ALL communities in the Northwest Territories.

Campers live outdoors, learn leadership skills, make new friends and discover their many talents. Activities include swimming and canoeing, bush‐skills, music, crafts, and storytelling.

Taiga Adventure Camp seeks to empower young women to achieve personal fulfillment through new experiences, self‐reflection, increased awareness and building healthy relationships. Our programming is designed to inspire, motivate, and create tangible life skills that make lasting impressions on young women as they transition from the teen years into adulthood.

There will be three land camps located outside of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and one river trip that takes place along the Mackenzie River, starting in Fort

The total cost is $250 per camper and includes the cost of airfare.

Taiga Adventure Camp is in its third year of operations. We’e had two great successful seasons to date and look forward to welcoming returning campers as well as new ones.

Summary: Painting on the Edge is a juried competition open to all living artists’ worldwide featuring original paintings, printmaking and drawing media. Abstract, expressive, impressionist or realist styles are welcome.

The name, Painting on the Edge, is partly derived from the physical location of Vancouver, BC Canada on the West Coast edge of North America but also from the challenge issued to the artists to push their artistic limits and create extraordinary and unique images.

Successful entries will combine an original subject or concept, feature excellent composition and skilful use of the chosen medium. They will capture the jury’s interest and excite or move the viewer because they represent the artist’s imagination, involvement and sincerity.

The Federation of Canadian Artists is a non-profit membership organization committed to the promotion and professional development of artists and services for art collectors. Its mission is to share and promote the passion and pleasure of the visual arts through exhibition, education and communication. Summary: The Sacred Circle has proposed its first Annual "Aboriginal Princess Pageant". This is NOT a beauty contest but instead an opportunity for a young lady between the age of 16 to 21 to become a role model in our community and to learn skills that will assist her in becoming "Strong in Both Worlds". Title holders must possess the ability to live successfully in the Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal societies.

  • Candidates should be knowledgeable about the Aboriginal organization that sponsor them and current issues affecting Aboriginal Peoples.
  • They should also be able to demonstrate involvement with Aboriginal people, scholastic achievement, poise, communication skills, and talent.
  • The contestant must be willing and able to act as a role model and represent their sponsoring organization and the Sacred Circle for one full year, with a healthy heart and a community minded spirit.
  • The contestant must be willing to mentor with an Elder at a minimum of four times throughout her reign as Aboriginal Princess, and be willing to attend one Aboriginal Conference that will allow her to learn skills and acquire knowledge of Aboriginal issues affecting her community.

One Contestant will be honored on June 21, Aboriginal Day, which will be determined by a Panel of Grandmothers.

The panel of Grandmothers will also become the mentors for the winning contestant for the year and the winning contestant will have to spend time learning a traditional skill at least 4 times throughout their reign.

To become the first Annual Aboriginal Princess, please fill out the application and submit to the Sacred Circle office by June 16, 2010 at 3pm.

Your application will be reviewed and judged by the Steering Committee. You will be required to come and meet with the Steering Committee, on June 17th or 18th for a personal interview.

You will also be required to answer impromptu questions on stage wearing traditional dress wear and will be judged by a panel of Grandmothers and one lucky young lady will be honored on that same day.

ALL JUDGES DECISIONS ARE FINAL!!!

Incomplete applications will NOT BE ACCEPTED. NO FAXES.

Applications will be accepted by hand only at the Sacred Circle Office: #203 Urbania Bldg.
